Step 1 - In order to decide how to get Digital TV, there are a number of things you will need to consider. Have a look at the illustration below.

Digital

  1. If you have poor or snowy TV reception now, you may need to consider replacing your existing aerial antenna.
  2. Some properties may require planning permission for digital equipment.
  3. Trees and hills can affect the quality of the signal. If you receive a good analogue signal now the aerial should be OK.
  4. If you have a set top aerial and get a good picture now it should be fine after switchover.
  5. If you want to record one channel while watching another you’ll need to get a digital TV recorder.
  6. Your radio will be unaffected by the switchover.
  7. You’ll need to convert all the TVs that you watch TV programs on.

Step 2 – Decide what equipment you need to receive Digital TV

You will need to know if your current television has a Digital Tuner. If your television does have an internal Digital Tuner you will only need the aerial antenna. If your television does not have a Digital Tuner, you will need to purchase a Digital Receiver (set top box).  Digital Receivers can be found at most electronic stores varying on price depending on make and model.

Sky Digibox

Networks transmit digital signals which are received by household aerial antennas. The aerial antenna needs to be connected to either your Digital Adapter (set top box) or to an Integrated Digital Television (a TV which has the adapter built inside) to view the services offered. Many people will be able to use their existing aerials to receive digital services but some may need to have new aerials or cabling installed to receive all services.

Step 3 – Scanning for stations

Once your equipment is in place, you will need to find the station’s channel positions.   To do this you will have to set your Digital Television or your Digital Receiver to scan for channels.  Each make and model will perform this operation slightly different, please refer to the manufacturers directions.

My Network TV WQMY will be found on channel 56.3.
