Gift to kids speaks volumes

HONESDALE - HONESDALE — Determined to make a contribution to her community, Barbara Houghtaling decided there’s nothing better than reading at an early age.

On Monday, the 59-year-old Rileyville woman gave a book to each student in kindergarten through second grade at the Stourbridge Primary Center and to each third-grader in Lakeside Elementary School.

And that’s just the beginning.

Ms. Houghtaling has purchased a book for every child in grades K-3 in the Wayne Highlands School District — which includes the Preston Area and Damascus Area schools — as well as St. Vincent’s School in Honesdale. She has also pledged $10,000 each over a two-year period to the elementary school libraries in Wayne Highlands and St. Vincent’s.

“I read every day,” Ms. Houghtaling told the children at Stourbridge Primary Center. “I love to read. I hope all of you will love to read the way that I do.”

Paralyzed two years ago in a car accident, Ms. Houghtaling recently received a settlement for her injuries. She would not disclose the amount, but she plans to give much of it away.

“My lifestyle has always been simple, and it’ll continue to be simple,” she said.

Prior to the accident, Ms. Houghtaling ran Rileyville Child Care, which her daughter, Karen Lorenzen, now operates. Ms. Houghtaling started reading to the children in her day care when they were 6 years old, and noticed their names on the honor roll years later, which reinforced her belief in the importance of reading.

Wayne Highlands won’t forget Ms. Houghtaling’s gift anytime soon.

“It’s a great supplement that just expands the volume of information we have here for the students,” Sam Tallo, Wayne Highlands assistant superintendent, said.

In Wayne Highlands alone, Ms. Houghtaling purchased more than 850 books at a cost of $3 to $4 each.

Filing out the door after receiving their books, the children walked with their heads down as they paged through their new gifts.

“They were so excited,” Ms. Houghtaling said. “Some of the little girls were just jumping. We could see it in their faces.”

Ms. Houghtaling plans to give each of the students another book to take home at the end of the school year to read over summer vacation.

She also wants to continue handing out books to students every year.

“You’ve got to reach them at an early age,” she said.
